Using a pocket chart, introduce a concept or activity that you intend to place at an independent learning center. Explain the sorting categories to children. Be sure children can correctly identify each photo. Invite children to correctly place the cards in the pocket chart.

What teachers are saying . . .
“I very much enjoy your products. I use the cards for small-group instruction to show the children how to do an activity. Then I place the cards at a center. The children have enjoyed the cards. I think the photographs are great.”

Create instant learning centers by providing children with a defined sorting space and a set of photo cards. Cut colorful craft foam or construction paper into strips. Place the strips side-by-side to create a sorting workspace. Provide children with a set of photo cards to sort into the specified number of columns using the identified categories. Or, create an “open sort” for children by challenging them to identify the categories in which they will sort their cards.

In Sight Word Sentence Frames children create multiple sentences using the same set of sight words and a variety of vocabulary words. Invite children to follow the directions on the Sentence Builder instruction sheets and then record their sentences on writing paper.

One-on-one instruction, in which a child receives explicit instruction by a teacher, is a very effective practice for improving outcomes for students with learning disabilities. The photos cards are perfect for this type of intervention and tutoring.
