Sorting Sounds

Supports the following reading standards:
• Distinguish between initial, medial, and final sounds in words.
• Count or tap the number of syllables in words.
• Segment words into individual phoneme sounds.
• Substitute one phoneme for another to make a new word.
• Identify and produce spoken words that rhyme.

The phonemic awareness sorting activities are color-coded by seven skills. A reproducible phonemic awareness assessment matches these seven skills so you can assess your children’s abilities and provide the appropriate sorting activities.

There are no words on any of the photo cards. All activities focus on listening to and identifying sounds—no reading required.
